It has been awhile since I last posted a blog, yet I have been writing more than ever. My recent application for medical schools have led to a constant flow of essays flowing in. I want to share a small concluding paragraph of a piece of work that I submitted to medical schools because I believe it perfectly encapsulate my pursuit of medicine.

... she said to me, “Thank you for treating me like a family and not a patient”. Even though to me, I was simply accompanying her through her consultation, to her, it meant someone cared and understood her. The feeling of knowing that I have made a difference in someone’s healthcare journey is something I’ll never take for granted. My exploration towards medicine has led me to a fork in the road. One path leads to the power of medicine to heal shown by the gentleman my father saved many years ago. The other path, however, leads to the harsh reality of barriers within medicine illustrated by my grandmother’s experience. As I stand at the crossroads, my motivation towards medicine doesn’t just come from one or the other, but from the realization that I can serve as a bridge between the two paths for individuals like Sophia, guiding them towards the path of healing with compassion, cultural humility, and advocacy.
